"Todos estavam à espera disto", disse Xanana Gusmão à imprensa antes de abandonar o local, referindo-se à assinatura da Declaração Conjunta entre o Governo e a Igreja católica, condição para o fim da manifestação convocada pela hierarquia católica.
Para o documento ser assinado, os bispos D. Alberto Ricardo Silva, de Díli, e D. Basílio do Nascimento, de Baucau, deveriam ter respondido à contraproposta que lhes foi remetida quarta-feira pelo Presidente e pelo primeiro-ministro timorenses, cujo conteúdo não foi divulgado"
